China's top battery makers are driving clean shipping, with new electric vessels and plans for a nuclear-powered ship by 2035.
China's top EV battery makers, CATL and Gotion High-tech, are expanding into shipbuilding to advance Beijing's clean energy shipping ambitions.
CATL, the world’s largest EV battery producer, has supplied batteries to 900 vessels and plans to launch its first pure electric ocean-going container ship within three years, while Gotion has developed swap-ready battery packs for a 132-container electric vessel.
China delivered the world’s first pure electric container vessel in late 2023 and held 65% of global shipbuilding orders by deadweight tonnage in the first three quarters of 2025, down from 75% the prior year as South Korea’s share rose to 25.9%.
In response, Chinese shipyards are shifting toward new-energy vessels, with Jiangnan Shipyard planning a nuclear-powered container ship by 2035 using a thorium-based reactor.
CATL also launched a waterborne vertiport for eVTOL aircraft, reflecting China’s broader push for sustainable maritime transport.
