A B.C. student team placed second at the global Ocean Hackathon with an AI tool to improve ocean search and rescue.
A team of five B.C.
students, including one from the University of Victoria, placed second at the global Ocean Hackathon 9 Grand Finale in France, becoming the only North American team in the top five of 57 international entries.
They developed Ocean Drift, an AI system using deep learning to analyze ocean currents in the Strait of Georgia to enhance search and rescue efforts.
The project, built during a 48-hour hackathon in Victoria and supported by Ocean Networks Canada, is designed to be scalable to other regions.
The team, from UVic, UBC, Northern University, and BCIT, won B.C.’s inaugural Ocean Hackathon to qualify.
They earned 3,000 euros and global recognition for advancing ocean sustainability through technology.
