Bangladesh's ASEAN membership push gains traction with Thailand’s support and plans for trade, shipping, and visa expansion.
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus said Bangladesh's bid for ASEAN membership is progressing, expressing optimism about Thai support during a meeting with Thailand’s new ambassador.
He highlighted Bangladesh’s role as a Sectoral Dialogue Partner and the strategic value of linking South and Southeast Asia.
Both sides discussed boosting trade, investment, maritime links, anti-scam efforts, and people-to-people ties.
Thailand plans to start free trade talks and launch a direct shipping route between Ranong and Chittagong ports in March, following February discussions.
Yunus also called for more visas for Bangladeshi travelers seeking medical care, education, business, and tourism.
