U.S. nominee Eric Meyer told the Senate Sri Lanka is vital to Indo-Pacific security, urging support for its reforms and transparency amid China’s growing influence.
U.S. nominee Eric Meyer testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, highlighting Sri Lanka’s strategic importance in the Indo-Pacific due to its location along major global shipping lanes, including routes carrying two-thirds of the world’s seaborne crude oil.
He emphasized U.S. concerns over China’s infrastructure investments, citing the Hambantota port as a cautionary example of strategic dependence, and pledged support for Sri Lanka’s economic reforms, maritime security, and transparency in infrastructure projects.
Meyer also underscored U.S. commitments to defense cooperation, disaster relief—such as a $2 million aid package for Cyclone Ditwah victims—and expanding commercial ties, particularly through the Port of Colombo’s planned expansion.
The testimony reflected broader U.S. efforts to strengthen bilateral partnerships amid rising regional competition.
