U.S. lifts sanctions on Brazilian justice and allies after diplomatic talks and Brazil’s amnesty law.
The U.S. lifted sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, his wife, and her organization, the Lex Institute, on December 12, 2025, reversing actions taken in July.
The move followed a phone call between President Donald Trump and Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Brazil’s passage of an amnesty bill.
The sanctions had been imposed under the Global Magnitsky Act over allegations de Moraes authorized arbitrary detentions and restricted free expression during the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of plotting to overturn his 2022 election loss and began serving a 27-year sentence.
The U.S. cited improved legal conditions as a reason for the reversal, signaling a diplomatic thaw.
