Raj Kumar Goyal appointed Chief Information Commissioner, restoring CIC to full strength after nine years.
Raj Kumar Goyal, a retired 1990-batch IAS officer, has been appointed Chief Information Commissioner of India’s Central Information Commission, set to take office on December 16, 2025, after a panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the appointment.
President Droupadi Murmu will administer his oath, followed by the swearing-in of eight new Information Commissioners.
The move restores the CIC to full strength—its maximum of 10 commissioners—for the first time in over nine years, ending a period of vacancy that began in September.
The appointments were approved by a selection committee including Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who dissented over selection criteria.
The new commissioners include former civil servants, journalists, and legal experts.
