Oregon Rep. Greg Smith faces expanded ethics probe over undisclosed conflict and misuse of office to secure a $66,000 raise, now under scrutiny for failing to repay it.
Oregon Representative Greg Smith, the state’s longest-serving lawmaker, is under an expanded ethics investigation for allegedly violating conflict-of-interest rules and misusing his public office to secure a $66,000 salary increase while leading a federally funded redevelopment agency.
The Oregon Government Ethics Commission extended the probe by 30 days to gather more evidence, including interviews with Smith and agency officials, after finding he failed to disclose a conflict and used his legislative position to push for a raise without board approval.
The federal grant that funded part of the pay increase was later revoked due to scrutiny over Smith’s compensation and work hours.
The CDA board rescinded the raise in September 2024 and demanded repayment, which Smith has not completed.
The commission may pursue a formal hearing or settlement, potentially including fines, with a decision expected in January.
