LUMS launches Pakistan’s first post-1947 Sanskrit course to revive shared South Asian heritage.
Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has launched a four-credit Sanskrit course, the first since Pakistan’s 1947 partition, expanding a popular weekend workshop.
The program, led by Dr. Ali Usman Qasmi and Dr. Shahid Rasheed, aims to train local scholars in classical Sanskrit texts like the Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita, drawing on Pakistan’s underused palm-leaf manuscript collections.
Driven by a desire to reclaim shared South Asian cultural heritage, the initiative emphasizes Sanskrit’s regional significance beyond religion.
Plans include expanding to a full-year course by 2027 and developing local expertise in Sanskrit scholarship within 10 to 15 years.
