Kim Jong Un honored North Korean engineers returning from combat in Russia’s Kursk region, praising their service and awarding them honors.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a Pyongyang ceremony honoring the return of the 528th Regiment of Engineers, who completed a 120-day deployment in Russia’s Kursk region supporting Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
According to state media, Kim praised the troops for their "heroic" conduct and loyalty, acknowledged nine soldiers killed in action, and awarded the regiment the Order of Freedom and Independence, with the fallen posthumously named Heroes of the DPRK.
The unit carried out combat and engineering tasks, including mine-clearing, under combat conditions.
The event, attended by officials, families, and crowds, reflects North Korea’s continued public recognition of its military involvement in the conflict, which South Korean, Ukrainian, and Western sources estimate involved over 6,000 troops, though North Korea has not confirmed the figure.
