Joel Bowman, 35, a former student of Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South in Memphis, avoided prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault and aggravated burglary in connection with a July 2023 shooting outside the school.
Denied entry while armed, Bowman fired multiple shots at a contractor and later pointed a gun at a responding officer, who shot him in the chest; he survived and has since recovered.
Authorities confirmed the attack was not motivated by antisemitism, though it occurred amid rising concerns about anti-Jewish violence.
Bowman’s defense cited mental health struggles, including trauma from his father’s 2003 death during a police encounter.
The school had recently upgraded security with electronic access, cameras, and emergency systems.
On December 12, 2025, Judge James Jones III sentenced Bowman to eight years of probation.
