Ireland launches taser use by frontline police Dec. 18, 2025, for immediate threats only.
A taser pilot program for frontline Irish police officers begins December 18, 2025, with 128 officers from three stations trained to use tasers only in immediate threats when safer alternatives aren’t available.
The devices will be used alongside body-worn cameras to enhance transparency and public trust.
The initiative, not intended to change policing culture, aims to provide a less-lethal option in volatile situations involving armed, distressed, intoxicated, or mentally unwell individuals.
Tasers have been used by specialist units since 2007, averaging two deployments monthly over the past five years.
