Iran seized a foreign oil tanker in the Sea of Oman on Dec. 12, detaining 18 crew members over alleged smuggling and evasion.
Iran seized a foreign oil tanker carrying about 6 million liters of diesel in the Sea of Oman near Jask on December 12, detaining its 18 crew members, including nationals from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
Iranian authorities said the vessel ignored stop orders, attempted to flee, lacked proper documentation, and had its radar disabled, with crew accused of damaging equipment.
The seizure, part of Iran’s efforts to combat fuel smuggling, comes amid heightened regional tensions following a U.S. seizure of a Tehran-linked tanker off Venezuela.
The tanker’s flag state was not disclosed.
