India launches ₹476 crore makhana modernization scheme to boost farming, processing, and exports.
The Indian government has launched a Rs 476.03 crore, six-year scheme (2025-26 to 2030-31) to modernize the makhana sector, with the National Makhana Board’s first meeting in New Delhi marking the start of implementation.
The initiative, approved following the Union Budget 2025-26 and launched by Prime Minister Modi in September, focuses on research, quality seed production, farmer training, improved farming and post-harvest practices, value addition, branding, marketing, and export readiness.
The Board, chaired by Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, reviewed action plans, allocated funds, and emphasized strengthening seed supply from Bihar institutions, expanding cultivation to new regions, advancing processing infrastructure, and building market and export linkages.
