India approves its first homegrown stroke stent, based on successful local trial data, for wider use.
AIIMS Delhi has led India’s first dedicated clinical trial of the Supernova Stent, a brain stent for treating severe strokes, in the GRASSROOT Trial across eight hospitals.
The trial, published in the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery, showed the device was safe and effective, with low rates of complications and 50% of patients regaining independence within 90 days.
Based on the domestic data, India’s CDSCO approved the stent—the first stroke device cleared in the country using local clinical evidence.
Developed by Gravity Medical Technology, the stent is tailored for India’s younger stroke patients, manufactured under the Make-in-India initiative, and now available at affordable prices.
It has already treated over 300 patients in Southeast Asia and offers new hope to India’s 1.7 million annual stroke patients.
