Federal agency threatens to cut $73M in highway funds to New York over CDLs issued to non-citizens.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has threatened to withhold $73 million in federal highway funding from New York unless it corrects issues with commercial driver’s licenses issued to non-citizens, citing a federal audit that found more than half of 200 reviewed licenses were improperly issued.
The department claims the state failed to verify immigration status and allowed licenses to remain valid beyond work authorization periods.
New York officials deny wrongdoing, stating they follow federal rules and that the licenses are federally regulated.
The move is part of a broader federal effort targeting Democratic-led states over immigration and safety concerns, following a fatal Florida crash and a review of non-domiciled CDLs nationwide.
The state has 30 days to respond.
