DOJ seeks to block judge’s probe into Trump-era deportations, citing separation of powers.
The Justice Department has asked the D.C.
Circuit Court to block Judge James Boasberg’s contempt inquiry into the Trump administration’s deportation of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador, arguing the probe threatens separation of powers and attorney-client privilege.
The department seeks Boasberg’s removal, calling the investigation biased and a “fishing expedition,” while asserting a March 15 court order was only verbal and not binding.
Boasberg, who maintains the administration acted in bad faith, plans to hear testimony from former Justice Department officials ahead of scheduled hearings.
The appeals court has granted a temporary stay but not ruled on the merits, leaving the hearing’s status uncertain.
