Congress moves to standardize cellphone limits in all overseas military schools by 2026.
Lawmakers are advancing a proposal in the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act to standardize and limit cellphone use across all 161 Department of Defense Education Activity schools worldwide, following the House’s passage and pending Senate approval.
The bill requires DODEA to establish consistent rules within 180 days of enactment to minimize disruptions and support learning, addressing current policy variations from complete bans to limited use during non-class time.
While DODEA officials assert existing guidelines are effective and student compliance is high, with little visible cellphone use observed during school visits, the change aligns with national trends as at least 32 states and D.C. have implemented similar restrictions to reduce distractions.
