Canada selects Ottawa-Montreal route for new high-speed rail, starting 2029.
The Canadian government has selected the Ottawa-Montreal corridor as the first segment of the Alto High-Speed Rail project, with construction set to begin in 2029.
The 200-kilometre route, chosen for its straight, flat terrain, will be the first phase of a planned 1,000-kilometre network connecting Toronto to Quebec City.
Trains are expected to reach speeds up to 300 km/h, cutting travel times in half.
Public and Indigenous consultations will start in January 2026, with pre-procurement activities beginning in 2026.
The project, managed by the Crown corporation Alto and backed by a consortium including CDPQ Infra and SNCF Voyageurs, could create 51,000 jobs and boost GDP by up to $35 billion.
The full project is estimated to cost between $60 billion and $90 billion.
