Alberta teachers union accuses government of deceptive bargaining and using the notwithstanding clause to pass back-to-work law.
The Alberta Teachers’ Association has filed a complaint alleging the provincial government engaged in bad faith bargaining during recent strike negotiations, claiming it misled the public by promising to hire 3,000 new teachers, only to reclassify those positions as existing budgeted roles.
The union also criticized the government for using the notwithstanding clause three times, including to pass a back-to-work law ending a three-week strike and to shield other legislation.
The teachers are challenging the law in court, while the government has not yet responded to the bargaining complaint.
