The European Southern Observatory’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), the world’s largest optical telescope, is under construction on Chile’s Cerro Armazones mountain.
With a 39-meter primary mirror and advanced adaptive optics, it will produce images 15 times sharper than Hubble’s.
Scheduled for technical first light in early 2029 and full scientific operations by December 2030, the ELT will study exoplanets, early galaxies, dark energy, dark matter, and star and black hole formation.
