Supreme Court upheld CBI probe into Karur stampede that killed 41, rejecting Tamil Nadu’s bid to alter its structure.
The Supreme Court on December 12, 2025, upheld its earlier order establishing a CBI probe into the September 27, 2025, Karur stampede that killed 41 people during a rally by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
The court rejected Tamil Nadu’s request to modify the probe’s structure, maintaining a three-member supervisory committee led by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi and requiring two senior IPS officers from Tamil Nadu’s cadre but not natives of the state.
It expressed concern over the Madras High Court’s handling of the case, citing jurisdictional overreach and procedural flaws, and reaffirmed the need for an impartial investigation amid allegations of political influence and improper conduct by state officials.
The CBI continues its probe from a temporary camp in Karur, having examined over 300 witnesses.
