Pakistan demands social media platforms remove militant-linked accounts or face legal action amid rising cyberattacks and extremism.
Pakistan has demanded that major social media platforms like X, TikTok, and YouTube take stronger action to remove militant-linked accounts, warning of legal consequences or platform restrictions if they fail to comply.
Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry said at least 19 accounts tied to militants were operating from India and over two dozen from Afghanistan, some linked to the Taliban, spreading extremist content.
He criticized X for limited cooperation, while praising Telegram’s response, and called for local offices and AI tools to detect terrorism-related material.
The government has previously banned platforms over content concerns and passed a broad social media bill with strict penalties.
Meanwhile, Pakistan faces nearly a million cyberattacks monthly, with over 180 million user credentials stolen, prompting plans for a new Cybersecurity Authority.
Officials stressed that combating online terrorism is vital for national and global security.
