A 2023–2024 inspection by NSW’s custodial services inspector found severe deterioration at Sydney’s Long Bay Prison, including mold, rust, vermin, and unsafe conditions in its aging Metropolitan Special Programs Centre.
The report, citing 45 recommendations, called for the permanent closure of the facility’s older section, highlighting unsanitary cells, poor ventilation, lack of privacy in showers, and inaccessibility for mobility aids.
Concerns were raised over inmate safety, particularly for those with disabilities, mental illness, or frailty, and a discriminatory poster was found promoting hate.
The government is reviewing the findings, while opposition leaders propose redeveloping the site into up to 12,000 homes if elected in 2027.
