New variable speed limits are being launched at 14 schools in Southland, New Zealand, to enhance child safety during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Starting with the new school year, electronic signs will reduce speeds to 30 km/h or 60 km/h for up to 45 minutes before and after school bells, and can activate during other high-traffic periods involving children.
Implemented by Waka Kotahi under the 2024 Land Transport Rule, the system is enforceable through the national speed limit register and aims to create safer, more predictable environments.
Schools and communities welcome the measure as part of a national push to lower speeds near schools by July 2026.
