Nel ASA approved scaling its new hydrogen tech in Norway, aiming for 1 GW by 2027 with EU funding.
Nel ASA has approved final investment to scale up its Next-Generation Pressurized Alkaline hydrogen technology at Norway’s Herøya facility, aiming for up to 1 GW of production capacity.
The modular, factory-tested system, developed after seven years and proven in full-scale tests, is expected to launch commercially in early 2026 and expand by 2027.
Designed to cut capital costs and boost efficiency, it could lower hydrogen’s levelized cost, reducing reliance on subsidies.
The project, backed by up to €135 million from the EU Innovation Fund, will require about NOK 300 million in investment.
The company is also assessing the future of two idle 500 MW atmospheric alkaline lines at the site.
