A 19-month-old in New Zealand died from strangulation due to a bed's unsafe fabric strap, prompting calls for redesign.
A 19-month-old boy in Canterbury, New Zealand, died in 2021 from strangulation after becoming entangled in a loose fabric strap on a bed sold by The Warehouse Group.
The coroner ruled the bed design was inherently unsafe due to the unnecessary fabric strap, which posed a strangulation risk even after the retailer updated instructions, added warning stickers, and strengthened fastenings.
The coroner concluded only a complete redesign eliminating the fabric straps could prevent future deaths.
The company confirmed it is working with its supplier to remove the straps from future designs.
