Maharashtra passes revised Lokayukta law, expanding oversight to state appointees in central bodies and requiring high court judges as chairpersons.
Maharashtra is set to implement a revised Lokayukta Act after both legislative houses approved amendments and the President granted assent, aligning the law with new central criminal codes and clarifying that state-appointed officials in central bodies fall under the Lokayukta’s jurisdiction.
The law requires a two-thirds majority in the state assembly to initiate inquiries against chief ministers, mandates special courts for corruption cases with a two-year completion target, and requires the Lokayukta chairperson to be a former or current high court or Supreme Court judge.
The current Lokayukta will remain in office until a successor is appointed.
The move follows pressure from activist Anna Hazare, who threatened a hunger strike if the law was not enforced by January 30, 2026.
