Longueuil police delayed reporting a teen's fatal shooting for over 90 minutes, sparking calls for a provincial probe.
Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier is calling for a provincial investigation into police conduct after documents revealed Longueuil police waited over 90 minutes to notify Quebec’s independent police watchdog, the BEI, following the September 21 fatal shooting of unarmed 15-year-old Nooran Rezayi.
Despite legal requirements to report such incidents immediately, police delayed notification until 4:34 p.m., after the BEI had already begun its probe, and continued interviewing witnesses afterward.
The BEI director criticized the delay, noting no credible threat from a second suspect, and questioned the justification for police-led actions that undermined the watchdog’s independence.
The officer involved is on indefinite sick leave, Rezayi’s family has filed a $2.2 million lawsuit, and both the BEI and Montreal police are investigating.
