Ireland plans a €4.58B–5.96B pipeline from the Shannon to Dublin and eastern regions to secure water for 1.7M people.
Uisce Éireann plans to submit a planning application for Ireland’s largest water project, a 170-kilometer pipeline from the River Shannon to Dublin and the eastern and midland regions, aimed at improving water security for up to 1.7 million people.
The project, expected to cost €4.58 billion to €5.96 billion, would transport treated water to a reservoir in Peamount, Dublin, with construction possibly starting in 2028 and lasting five years.
It aims to reduce reliance on a single water source, support regional development, and create over 1,000 direct jobs, backed by a community benefit scheme.
Public consultation will begin in January 2026, with a decision expected within 48 weeks.
