India's Supreme Court rules forcing acid ingestion is attempted murder, mandates state action on compensation and faster trials.
The Indian Supreme Court ruled that forcing acid victims to ingest the substance constitutes attempt to murder, not just grievous hurt, calling such acts a grave threat to society and the rule of law.
The court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, emphasized the need for severe penalties and directed all states to respond within six weeks on expanding compensation schemes to include victims of internal acid ingestion.
The decision follows a Public Interest Litigation by survivor Shaheen Malik, who suffered severe injuries in a 2009 attack, and comes amid concerns over prolonged delays in acid attack trials, including her own case, which the court ordered to conclude by December 31, 2025.
La Corte Suprema de la India dictamina que la ingestión forzosa de ácido es intento de asesinato, ordena la acción estatal en compensación y juicios más rápidos.
