India approves 10 semiconductor units, drawing $19B in investment, advancing domestic chip production under Semicon India.
India's Semicon India Programme is advancing a full semiconductor ecosystem encompassing design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and packaging, with Union Minister Jitin Prasada confirming on December 12, 2025, that ten major semiconductor units have been approved, attracting Rs 1.6 lakh crore in investment.
The initiative, part of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, has driven significant growth in electronics manufacturing and exports, supported by production-linked incentives and the Design Linked Incentive Scheme, which has backed 23 companies in developing 24 chip designs.
Efforts to build domestic talent include training over 67,000 students through the Chips to Startup programme, providing design tools to 397 institutions, and facilitating the fabrication of 56 chips, while academic reforms and partnerships aim to strengthen expertise in nanofabrication and advanced packaging.
