India approves ₹11,718 crore digital census for 2027, first fully digital with mobile data collection and electronic caste data.
India has approved a ₹11,718.24 crore plan for its 2027 Census, the first fully digital census in the country’s history, to be conducted in two phases: house-listing and housing census from April to September 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027, with remote areas completing enumeration in September 2026.
Nearly 30 lakh field workers will use mobile apps on Android and iOS to collect data, supported by a central monitoring portal and a Census Management & Monitoring System.
For the first time, caste data will be collected electronically.
The Census-as-a-Service model will deliver clean, machine-readable data to government ministries, while self-enumeration and web map tools will improve public access.
The initiative aims to enhance data accuracy, speed up dissemination, and generate 1.02 crore man-days of employment.
