Hong Kong's court to rule on Jimmy Lai’s national security trial over Apple Daily’s alleged foreign collusion and sedition.
Hong Kong’s High Court is set to deliver its verdict on Monday in the national security trial of 78-year-old pro-democracy media figure Jimmy Lai, who faces life imprisonment if convicted on charges of foreign collusion and sedition related to his role in the now-closed Apple Daily.
The trial, which began in December 2023 and lasted 156 days, has drawn international scrutiny over concerns about press freedom and political repression under Hong Kong’s 2020 national security law.
Lai, detained since December 2020 and held in solitary confinement for over 1,800 days, denies all charges and has cited deteriorating health due to diabetes and heart issues.
While Hong Kong and Chinese authorities maintain the trial was fair and lawful, Western governments and rights groups have criticized it as politically motivated.
The decision, expected at 10 a.m. local time, will be announced by a three-judge panel.
