Do Kwon, the South Korean founder of Terraform Labs, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for fraud related to the 2022 collapse of the TerraUSD stablecoin, which lost its $1 peg and erased $40 billion in value.
Kwon, who pleaded guilty to misleading investors about the stablecoin’s stability, admitted to using deceptive tactics to maintain its value.
Prosecutors recommended a 12-year sentence, citing his cooperation and time served, while his defense sought no more than five years, emphasizing remorse and lack of greed.
He was arrested in Montenegro in March 2023 using a fake passport and extradited to the U.S.
The case, which devastated global crypto markets, also led to a $80 million civil penalty and a ban on future crypto transactions.
