Craig Macy named interim Buffalo police commissioner effective Jan. 1, 2026, pending a national search.
Craig Macy, former chief of detectives for the Buffalo Police Department, has been appointed interim police commissioner effective January 1, 2026, when Mayor-elect Sean Ryan takes office.
Macy, 44, retired in August after a career that included leading efforts credited with reducing gun violence in Buffalo.
His appointment, announced by outgoing Commissioner Al Wright and confirmed by Ryan, aims to ensure leadership continuity during the transition.
Macy will serve in the interim role while Ryan’s administration conducts a national search for a permanent commissioner.
The mayor-elect also announced a new four-deputy mayoral structure, increased pay for the interim commissioner to at least $100,000, and external funding to support recruitment and retention.
The appointment is subject to Common Council review.
