Aldi mocked Lidl’s opening in Wantage with a "cheapest" ad, despite no local store.
On December 11, 2025, Aldi drew attention at Lidl’s grand opening in Wantage, Oxfordshire, with a moving advertisement claiming Aldi was Britain’s cheapest supermarket for four years running.
The lorry passed the newly opened Lidl store, which had long queues, food samples, and special deals, sparking social media reactions calling the stunt “cheeky.” Though Aldi has no current store in Wantage, it operates nearby in Faringdon, Didcot, and Abingdon and had previously considered expanding there.
Lidl’s regional property head, Kate Bleloch, expressed enthusiasm about the new location, highlighting its bakery and gardening sections.
Kantar data from the 12 weeks ending November 30 shows Aldi holds 10.5% of the UK grocery market, compared to Lidl’s 8.1%.
