U.S. House passes bill to lift Syria sanctions after Assad's ouster, pending Senate vote.
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to repeal the Caesar Act sanctions on Syria, included in the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, with bipartisan support.
The sanctions, enacted in 2019 over alleged war crimes under Bashar al-Assad, are being lifted following his ousting by rebel forces in December 2024 and the establishment of a new government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The bill requires the White House to report every 180 days on Syria’s progress in countering extremist groups and protecting minority rights, with the option to reimpose sanctions if benchmarks are not met.
The legislation now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to be voted on before year’s end.
