Willibald Bianchi, a U.S. Army captain from New Ulm, Minnesota, who went missing during World War II after earning the Medal of Honor for bravery on the Bataan Peninsula, has been officially accounted for over 80 years later.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified his remains using DNA analysis, anthropological evidence, and historical records after exhuming unidentified remains from a mass grave in Taiwan.
Bianchi, captured by Japanese forces and later killed during a ship sinking in 1944, will be buried in his hometown in May 2026.
His name remains on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery.
