South Korea’s former acting leader Choi Sang-mok was indicted on Thursday on charges of dereliction of duty for failing to fill a vacant seat on the Constitutional Court during the December 2024 martial law crisis, which led to the impeachment and removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The court later unanimously ruled to remove Yoon, who now faces rebellion charges.
Choi, who also served as prime minister and finance minister, is accused of undermining the court’s ability to act.
Another acting leader, Han Duck-soo, was similarly indicted and previously faced more serious allegations.
Five other officials, including Yoon’s justice minister, were also charged, with Choi facing additional perjury allegations.
The probes, led by independent counsel under new President Lee Jae Myung, have expanded to include Yoon’s wife and figures linked to the Unification Church over bribery and financial misconduct.
