Oklahoma independents barred from 2026–2027 party primaries due to missed notice deadline.
Independent voters in Oklahoma will be barred from participating in Democratic and Republican primaries during the 2026–2027 election cycles after the state election board ruled no party submitted the required notification to allow their participation.
Despite the Oklahoma Democratic Party's claim it met the deadline, the board said its August notice pertained to a ballot symbol change, not primary access.
The decision, based on state law, excludes over 487,000 registered independents from selecting party nominees.
The Democratic Party plans to seek legal advice, while efforts continue to place State Question 836 on the ballot, which would allow all voters to participate in primaries.
The signature deadline for the initiative is January 26, 2026.
