Newcastle council approves safety upgrades at Strzelecki Lookout after a suicide, citing 2,700-signature petition.
Newcastle City Council has unanimously approved safety upgrades at Strzelecki Lookout following the November 7 suicide of 31-year-old Aden Nankervis, responding to a petition with over 2,700 signatures.
The plan includes installing crisis-support signage, evaluating vehicle-rated bollards, emergency help points, and potential CCTV, along with a comprehensive safety review of the site and surrounding area.
The council will consult NSW Health, NSW Police, Lifeline, and local services, with signage to be installed this financial year.
While no single measure is seen as a cure, officials believe evidence-based infrastructure changes could delay access and create opportunities for intervention.
Decisions on high-risk site designations and specific measures remain with state agencies, and the council will also learn from Lake Macquarie City Council’s efforts.
Support services are available for those in distress.
