Biosecurity New Zealand has expanded the surveillance zone for invasive yellow-legged hornets in Auckland to 11 kilometers, more than doubling its size, following expert advice.
The area now includes parts of the city center and extends to Rangitoto Island.
Over 30 queen hornets and 22 nests have been destroyed, with more than 5,600 public reports received.
Enhanced measures include new traps, hive inspections, and electronic tracking of worker hornets.
Authorities urge the public to report sightings and remain vigilant, as the response costs about $1 million monthly.
Meanwhile, Auckland Council is investigating a separate bee swarm reported near High and Shortland Streets, with no confirmed species or safety risks.
