New Zealand delays banning pig crates until 2035, defying a 2020 court ruling and public demand.
New Zealand’s government has delayed the ban on farrowing crates for mother pigs by at least 10 years, despite a 2020 High Court ruling calling the confinement systems unlawful and overwhelming public opposition.
The rushed passage of the Animal Welfare (Regulations for Management of Pigs) Amendment Bill, developed with input from the pork industry and excluding animal welfare experts, extends the use of crates that restrict pigs’ ability to move, nest, and care for their young.
Critics, including the Green Party and SAFE, say the decision prioritizes industry interests over science, law, and public opinion, undermining animal welfare standards and democratic process.
The new rules will take effect by 2035.
