A new two-lane bridge will replace the aging, one-lane Pekatahi Bridge on State Highway 2 near Tāneatua in New Zealand’s Eastern Bay of Plenty, following inspections that confirmed a full replacement is necessary.
The project, part of the NZ Transport Agency’s End-of-Life Bridge Programme, will cost $64 million to $69 million, with construction set to begin mid-2027 and take 18 months.
Built adjacent to the existing bridge, the new structure will feature earthquake-resistant foundations, an elevated deck for flood protection, and support for High Productivity Motor Vehicles.
In the interim, steel plates will be installed in early 2026, and a temporary closure is planned for December 15–18, 2025.
The upgrade aims to improve safety, reliability, and regional economic connectivity.
