A Missouri man with a green card faces deportation to the Netherlands due to past drug convictions, despite long-term U.S. residency and community support.
Owen Ramsingh, a Columbia, Missouri, green card holder who has lived in the U.S. since age five, is to be deported to the Netherlands after a New Mexico immigration judge imposed a lifetime reentry ban.
Despite renewing his green card in February and having long-term residency, the decision follows past drug convictions, including a 1997 cocaine charge and a 2011 marijuana offense later expunged.
Ramsingh was detained in September at a Chicago airport while returning from a family visit.
His case has drawn community support, with a GoFundMe and care packages, and may allow a waiver in 8 to 10 years.
