Lisa Fair McEvers wins North Dakota's first female chief justice role, taking office Jan. 1, 2026.
Lisa Fair McEvers has been elected North Dakota’s first female chief justice, set to take office January 1, 2026, after winning 83% of the vote in a judicial election.
She defeated Justice Jerod Tufte, who received 16%, in a vote by 58 eligible judges and justices.
McEvers, appointed to the Supreme Court in 2014, previously ran for the role in 2019 but lost to Jon Jensen, who is stepping down to spend more time with family.
She will serve as the state’s judicial administrative leader, advocating for increased resources for district court judges and the elimination of judicial referee positions, though the chief justice holds no extra voting power.
McEvers is the fourth woman to serve on the North Dakota Supreme Court.
