India’s ethanol-blended petrol program saved $17 billion, cut emissions, and aided farmers without vehicle damage, with E10 and E20 safe for most vehicles.
On December 11, 2025, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Lok Sabha that ethanol-blended petrol (E10 and E20) does not harm vehicles, citing testing showing no issues with drivability, startability, or materials.
The program has saved India over Rs 1.4 lakh crore in foreign exchange, reduced CO2 emissions by 790 million metric tonnes, and replaced 260 million metric tonnes of crude oil.
Farmers received Rs 40,000 crore for supplying raw materials like sugarcane and maize.
Vehicles made after April 1, 2023, are E20-compatible, while older models work with E10; no retrofitting is needed, and safety standards are set by BIS and industry bodies.
