A global crackdown seized nearly 30,000 live animals and disrupted a $20 billion wildlife crime network.
A global law enforcement operation led by Interpol, Operation Thunder 2025, resulted in the seizure of nearly 30,000 live animals, including birds, reptiles, primates, and exotic arthropods, across 134 countries between September 15 and October 15, marking a record high.
Authorities also seized 5.8 tonnes of bushmeat, over 10,500 insects, and nearly 14,000 pieces of illegally logged timber, while identifying around 1,100 suspects and arresting 27 individuals in South Africa, Vietnam, and Qatar.
The operation highlighted the growing sophistication of wildlife crime networks linked to drug trafficking and human exploitation, with the illegal trade estimated at $20 billion annually, driven by demand for exotic pets, traditional medicine, and luxury foods.
