Eastern Michigan University has named Flint native and EMU alumnus Dr. Brendan Kelly as its 24th president, effective May 4, 2026, succeeding retiring President James Smith.
Kelly, currently president of the Arkansas State University System, will return to his alma mater after a nationwide search led by the Board of Regents and a 15- to 16-member advisory committee.
He holds degrees from EMU and a doctorate from Wayne State University, with extensive leadership experience across multiple universities.
His appointment follows Smith’s nearly 10-year tenure, marked by campus improvements and expanded student services.
Kelly’s five-year contract includes a $520,000 annual salary.
