Wisconsin expands Move Over Law to protect drivers and first responders stopped with hazard lights on.
Wisconsin has expanded its Move Over Law to include disabled vehicles, requiring drivers to move over or slow down when approaching stopped vehicles with hazard lights on, effective immediately after Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 409 into law.
The change, aimed at protecting stranded motorists and first responders, follows data showing 145 injuries and five deaths involving stopped vehicles over the past five years.
Drivers must yield safely when possible, and penalties for noncompliance include fines up to $300.
WisDOT urges drivers to stay alert and create safe spaces, while stranded drivers should pull as far off the road as possible and remain aware of traffic.
